Shumen – 1000 years of culture and history

Shumen, a town in north-east Bulgaria, is a real treasure trove of history. Just a few kilometres away are the ruins of the old capitals of Pliska and Veliki Preslav, which bear witness to the former greatness of the Bulgarian Empire. These cities once formed the centrepiece of the Bulgarian state and are now popular destinations for history buffs.one of Shumen’s landmarks is the impressive Tombul Mosque dating from 1745, one of the largest mosques in the Balkans and the largest in Bulgaria. In the immediate vicinity is the impressive monument to the founder of the Bulgarian state, Khan Asparuh.

Another UNESCO World Heritage Site near Shumen is the Horseman of Madara, an equestrian figure carved into the rock depicting a Bulgarian khan. This impressive sculpture is a testimony to early Bulgarian art and history and is considered one of the most important historical monuments in Bulgaria. That includes Shumen Fortress, a medieval fortress that once played an important role in the city’s defence. Today it houses a museum documenting the history of the fortress and the region.

Another impressive monument is the National Revival Monument. A brutalist concrete monument that commemorates the Bulgarian national movement. It is located high above the city and can be seen from far away.
